The Greta Effect:
Visualising Climate Protest

In 2021 I published a paper in Global Environmental Change which shows a shift in the visual reporting on climate change protest, away from a negative portrayal of protesters and towards an intergenerational-justice framing of climate protest, which emphasises the power and agency of young women and girls.

Impact

This research has been popular with both academic and practitioner audiences. My paper "The Greta Effect" appears on a Journalism and Mass Communication syllabus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Spring, 2022), and a recorded presentation of this work has been internally circulated at various government departments including DIT, BEIS and DCMS.

In February 2021, I advertised and hosted a webinar to communicate this work to an audience of nearly 100 journalists, photographers, campaigners, and academics from more than eight countries.

I also spoke about this project on a BBC podcast, which you can listen to here.
